Many of us in the folk music community are deeply troubled by the results of the election. No matter what side you are on, there’s no doubt we have a great divide in this country that could use some healing.
The best antidote? Bring more light into the world. We need more artists and folksingers out there spreading the love and calling out the hate, bigotry and sexism that has risen to the surface.
Singer/songwriter Peter Mulvey said, “Our work matters, now more than ever.” We at Art of the Song have long been encouraging listeners to explore, develop and share their creative gifts. As our friend Don Richmond said in so many words, we must keep doing what we do, only do it better.
Vivian and I have made the commitment to go out and hear live music at least once a week. Already, this is making us feel more hopeful and grounded!
Music is a healing force. Music brings people together. Music has the power to change lives. Having grown up in the 60s, I can assure you that music plays an integral part in bringing about social change.
The trouble is, it’s more difficult than ever for working musicians to earn a decent living. CD sales and downloads are declining, and most streaming sites pay only a fraction of a penny per play. If we don’t take action soon, there will be no folksingers out there to do this important work!
The Standing ‘O’ Project provides a platform where we can join together in community, and give musicians a solid financial foundation. We have the power in this community to change the music business and change the world.
Here’s how you can help:
1. Keep sharing your creative gifts!
2. Encourage your friends and family to join the Standing ‘O’ Project
3. Encourage musicians you know to sign up as Artist Members
4. Increase your monthly contribution (Katie or I can make the change)
5. Go out for live music once a week
6. Invite your local coffeeshops to play our Fair Trade Coffeehouse Music
Let’s grow this mighty music community. Let’s spread so much light that the darkness cannot survive. We can do this!
Standing and applauding,
